How to Begin Researching Colleges for Your Major and Find Scholarships
- Go to Niche
- Create an account
- You do not have to include your actual phone number or address if you don't feel comfortable. I would recommend you use your actual email address.
- Save your login info so you can get back into your account later.
- You will need your GPA. You will find this in Self-Serve where you log in and see your grades.
- See Mr. Powell if you don't know how to find your GPA.
- Your GPA will need to be converted to the 4 point scale. You can find a conversion chart here.
- Once you have entered your contact info, the site will recommend some schools for you. You can click yes, maybe, or no according to your interest.
- Uncheck the box for Chegg and click save and continue.
- Click My Profile.
- Complete your info by filling out as much as you can under
- "Chance Me"
- School recommendation factors
- Scholarship matching criteria
- Once you have updated account, begin researching colleges that are a good school for your first choice of major.
- Go to "Find Colleges"
- Find at least three schools that have good programs for your first choice of a major.
- You can also check out schools at the site AcceptanceRate.com.
- For each of your three choices, you will need to write down:
- Where is the school located?
- The tuition rate (out of state if it is not in Texas)
- Number of undergrads
- Acceptance rate
- What GPA range do most students who are accepted have?
- What SAT or ACT scores do most students have who are accepted?
- How difficult is it to get in? (according to AcceptanceRate)
- What aspects are rated highly (A or above)? Are these important to you?
- What aspects are rated poorly (C+ or below)? Are these important to you?
